Plus: 1st Apppearance of Neon Genesis Evangelion VHS Ad
The second and certainly not the last cover for Sailor Moon.
Lots of Sailor Moon in this issue but I mainly wanted to point out the Sailor Moon puns, gadget list and Japanese and English names for the Sailor Moon Special Attacks.
I really cringe at 90′s marketing. Case in point: Suncoast Video. “Futons. Karate. Sushi. They never prepared you for this Japanese custom.” At least most of their ads had a $5 coupon.
Also check out the ‘Sailor Moon in Mall Madness’ Remember Twisted Toyfare? – where the photograph figures in a diorama and add word balloons? The first issue of Toyfare was 1997. This issue was released in mid 1996. Who came up with this concept? Was is around before? I’d like to know.
Also, should I watch M.D. Geist? This ad has increased my curiosity but I’ve heard people cringe about it.
Speaking of MD Geist, Suncoast’s sweepstakes ad for the series has a nauseating barf background.
Convention report Time!!! This time it’s Katsucon 1996 and Project A-Kon 1996. Lots of cosplay pics and a great journal of experiencing anime cons where they were smaller and more intimate where you could really bump into the same people over and again. The pic on the first page proves that Sailor Moon crossplay has existed for ever. I like the Top Ten list: “Top Ten Things To Do When The Power Goes Out At A-Kon” and “Top Ten Pick-Up Lines” My favorite is #3.
This month in Anime Fan Art is lots of kissing. Lots. Of. Kissing.
And finally three firsts.
First time ADV used in their ads ADV Films and dropped Vision from branding.
First ad for Neon Genesis Evangelion.
First use of a URL to promote their brand new website.
You know a title like Neon Genesis Evangelion is going to be huge when you only give it the third billing at the bottom corner of an ad primarily promoting Miyuki-chan in Wonderland and Suikoden Demon Century titles. Pricing for Volume 1 Evangelion English Subtitle VHS: $29.95, English Dub VHS: $24.95.
